A Note on How to Create Teasers When Posting

Todd Hoff's picture

I fully and enthusiastically encourage anyone who wants to share a relevant topic to register and post. People have added a lot of good and useful content. Don't be shy. It's been asked how a teaser is created when posting so the full article doesn't display on the front page. A teaser is a paragraph interesting enough to convince readers to click on the "read more" link to get the full article.

Creating a teaser in Drupal is accomplished by inserting < ! -- break -- > on a separate line directly after the text you want to be the teaser. Only DO NOT include the spaces. So your post looks like:
Teaser Content
< ! -- break -- > (no spaces in real life)
Rest of Content

It's a bit kludgey, but it works.

Thanks Todd :p

Re: A Note on How to Create Teasers When Posting

The downside of using teasers is that the full article doesn't appear in the feeds. So us subscribers are forced to click on the link in order to read the content in our web browser. A major PITA if you're trying to catch up on your feeds offline.

Can we switch the feeds to ignore the teasers and always show the full article?

Cheers - Callum.

I don't see anything like that as an option in the admin panel. If anyone knows how to change it just let me know.

Re: A Note on How to Create Teasers When Posting

I'm not a drupal user, but it seems that you can choose either for the feeds:
http://drupal.org/node/91108

Also, this was posted in response to my question on the #drupal channel:
see admin/content/node-setting; To disable teasers, set to 'Unlimited'

Actually, another user suggested that option would change the settings for both the site and the feeds.
Michelle> That will change them on your site as well

Michelle> Another possibility is the contemplate module which lets you theme your RSS items

Does that help at all?

I'm not familiar with Drupal, I'm a WordPress admin, so I can't offer much more advice.

Cheers - Callum.

Re: A Note on How to Create Teasers When Posting

Maybe that's some kind of offtop, but you could have used – html entity in this topic to prevent the <––break––> from falling into html comments or the exact breaking of an article, even without help of inserting additional spaces.

Hi Todd,

To enable full text rss feeds you should go here:
http://highscalability.com/admin/content/rss-publishing
and select Feed Content--> Full Text, that should do it.
{why not check adsense for rss feeds}
Hope it works, it's for drupal 6 and I think you are using 5.
BTW: you should upgrade.
